Celebrating Haitian Literature

This April with support from the Maine Humanities Council, Mano en Mano is celebrating Haitian literature through a discussion based book club!

Participants will read sections of these three books

This group will be led by poet and educator, Samara Cole Doyon.  Samara  is a second generation Haitian American and award winning children's book author, with graduate-level teacher training from the University of Southern Maine.  She will lead our group in discussing sections from the works entitled: KRIK? KRAK!, Breath, Eyes, Memory and The Magic Orange Tree.

This project is designed to gain a deeper understanding of Haitian storytelling and folktales, all while celebrating Haitian artists and culture.

Cynthia Simpson, organizer of the event and Community Advocate at Mano en Mano, shares: “This project is designed to encourage dialogue and discussion about Haitian literature, while allowing participants to gain a deeper understanding about different cultures, storytelling styles, and use of metaphor.”

Participants will receive all 3 books, at no additional costs and access to weekly meetings over the month of April.

If you would like to join the book club, participate in other events, or are interested in learning more, please contact Cynthia at: (207) 800 5112
