Nuestra Voz en la Comunidad celebrates Father's Day

On Sunday, June 24th, members of Nuestra Voz en la Comunidad and allies gathered at the Milbridge ball field for a community celebration in honor of Father's Day. This was the first year that the group decided to organize the event as a partner to the long-standing tradition of Mano en Mano's Mother's Day celebration. The day featured a barbecue and potluck along with a friendly game of soccer and a piñata! This event was made possible thanks to the ideas and volunteer hours generously shared by members of Nuestra Voz en la Comunidad.

To emphasize the mission of the event, the following statement was read in support of justice for im/migrant families across the country:

English:

On this Father’s Day BBQ, we celebrate dads here today and fathers and parents around the world separated from their families because of walls, borders or bars. In the last few weeks, we’ve seen images of children separated from their parents and put into cages by the state. This administration created this policy and problem and are now reversing it but the harms have already occurred. The United States has a long and shameful history of forced family separation from colonization of indigenous communities to slavery to internment camps.

This history plus more recent actions show the real need for permanent protection for all undocumented immigrants in this country. On June 30, there will be a national day of action against family separation. Mano en Mano and this community has been invited to participate in actions taking place in Eastport, Machias, Bangor and Portland. If this issue is important to you and you’re trying to figure out a way to show up for the immigrant community, come talk with us today. Happy Father’s Day.
