Winter at Rayitos de Sol

Even though the sun isn’t as bright during the winter months in Maine, the kiddos at Rayitos de Sol are still shining!

Making our own piñata to celebrate Día de la Candelaría

As we near completion of the new Rayito de Sol Bilingual Childcare (read more here!), this winter students have been busy learning, playing and growing!  Curriculum this winter focused on celebrating holidays, practicing fine and gross motor skills, and getting outside.  We hope you enjoy reading more about some of the activities children participated in this winter.

The Great Outdoors

The cold weather didn’t stop our kiddos!  We bundled up and enjoyed the snowy days by making snow-people, snow angels and snow forts!  We also learned about animals that live outside by watching the birds that visited our bird feeder.

Let’s Get Cooking!

This winter we put our culinary skills to the test and decorated cookies, made bread, and cooked Tamales de Fresa (Strawberry Tamales), to celebrate Día de la Candelaría.  The tamales were a hit and students learned how to mix the dough, fill the corn husk and cook their very own tamales to enjoy with their friends.

Inspired by Black History Month

In February  we read different books about famous Black leaders throughout history.  One person we learned about was Alma Thomas and her creative and colorful abstract paintings.  Students celebrated her work by creating their very own art inspired by her pieces.

Celebrating the Season

We celebrated love and friendship by making and giving valentines to our friends and loved ones. We also learned about St Patricks day, and made our own shamrock art!

Using our Imaginations

Our kiddos are creative and imaginative!  We made our own city using tape, trucks, and blocks.  We also practiced balancing and stacked blocks to make tall skyscrapers and towers.

Practice Makes Progress!

This winter we practiced our fine and gross motor skills by making our own playdough, and practicing zipping, buckling and tying!  Children were able to learn through play and develop their fine motor skills through movement.

Piñata Making

Together we created our very own Piñata to celebrate Día de la Candelaria!  This was a long process with lots of paper mache, painting, and filling it with candy!  At the end, everyone got a chance to hit the piñata and sing the piñata song!

Dale, dale, dale! no pierdas el tino,

Porque si lo pierdes… pierdes el camino;

Ya le diste una!

ya le diste dos!

ya le diste tres!…y tu tiempo se acabo!!”
_

“Hit it, hit it, hit it! Don’t loose the aim,

Because if you loose it, you loose the way;
You already hit it once!
You already hit it twice!

You already hit it three! and your time is up!

We still need more help to complete our new childcare facility that will serve up to 64 children ages infant- elementary school!

Please consider making a gift to support kids and families in Maine!
